Recorded: NaCena, Sao Paulo, Brasil. Additional recording at Samurai Hotel Studios, NY. Orchestra recorded at Abbey Road Studios, London, UK

Pianist/singer/songwriter Eliane Elias is known for her distinctive and immediately recognizable musical style which blends her Brazilian roots and her sensuous, alluring voice with her virtuosic instrumental jazz, classical and compositional skills.

Made in Brazil marks a musical homecoming for Elias. In her three-decade long career as a solo artist,Made in Brazil results from the first time she’s recorded a disc in her native Brazil since moving to the United States in 1981.

Elias wears many hats on this project as producer, composer, lyricist, arranger, pianist and vocalist. Along with co-producers, Steve Rodby and Marc Johnson, her bass playing musical partner, Elias ventured ‘home’ and recruited a splendid cast of Brazilian musicians that include electric bassist Marcelo Mariano; guitarists Marcus Teixeira and Roberto Menescal; drummers Edu Ribeiro and Rafael Barata; and percussionists Mauro Refosco and Marivaldo dos Santos.

Elias peppered the sessions with delightful special guest performances from Mark Kibble and the multi-GRAMMY® Award winning Gospel vocal group Take 6, her singer/songwriter-daughter Amanda Brecker, one of Brazil’s most celebrated R&B stars, Ed Motta, and renowned bossa nova composer Roberto Menescal. Elias also invited Rob Mathes to handle orchestral arrangements on seven of the 12 tracks, which were recorded in London at the legendary Abbey Road studios.

Winner of the Juno award Vocal Jazz Album of 2013, Toronto-born singer and voice actress Emilie-Claire Barlow got an early start to her prolific career, as her professional musician parents encouraged her to sing and study several instruments, including piano, cello, clarinet and violin.
Barlow started doing radio jingles and television voice-overs at the age of 7. Since 1998 she’s released a string of albums, hypnotizing critics and audiences alike with her pitch perfect ethereal voice. In 2008 Barlow was named female artist of the year at the National Jazz Awards. The Beat Goes On album came out in the fall of 2010. The all-French album Seule ce soir followed two years later.

Recorded: 2009 at Doane LeBlanc studio in Toronto, Ontario, Canada

„The Beat Goes On“ is the eighth album in a recording career that now spans 12 years, and it is a record of which she is justifiably proud. Emilie-Claire Barlow’s charm, vocal chops, song selection and great taste in side men allows her concerts to consistently access the elegance of jazz while sweeping away any cobwebs that could cloud a listeners experience of jazz pop today.

The potent combination of well-honed vocal and musical chops and a charming stage presence has earned Emilie-Claire Barlow a size-able and loyal following worldwide.

„With “The Beat Goes On” Toronto-based jazz singer Emilie-Claire Barlow has done what a few wise singers are doing these days, namely looking to more recent eras and songwriters for fresh material rather than the overdone American Songbook. This time out, Barlow has focused her considerable talents and jazz sensibilities on the 60s. The opening track sets the tone for the album as Kelly Jefferson provides nuanced sax fills on a swingy 6/8 version of Bacharach’s Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head. Barlow has written all the arrangements herself and the stripped down instrumentation that predominates fits her light, pretty voice like a Pucci print dress. We feel transported to a Yorkville coffeehouse as just bass and congas (Ross MacIntyre and Davide Direnzo) accompany These Boots Were Made for Walkin’. Very groovy. Iconic sounds of the 60s bubble up in the woodwinds on Soul Bossa Nova as it’s mashed up with the classic Sonny & Cher title track.“
„An exploration of the 60s wouldn’t be complete without a journey to that hotbed of musical innovation, Rio de Janiero, and the cover of O Barquinho (My Little Boat) featuring Reg Schwager’s nylon string guitar skills perfectly evokes a carefree Brazilian day. Barlow’s specialty is bossa nova (do yourself a favour and find her version of O Pato on YouTube) so when she surprisingly imposes that style on Dylan’s Don’t Think Twice, It’s Alright it actually works.“ –Cathy Riches, theWholeNote

Studio Master, Official Digital Download | Source: PonoMusic | @ Legacy Recordings

Iconic Jazz artist Erroll Garner’s greatest concert album and one of the best selling jazz albums of all time, The Complete Concert By The Sea celebrates the 60th Anniversary of the original concert from September 19, 1955. The complete live concert recording newly uncovered by the Erroll Garner Jazz Project and digitally remastered in its entirety after six decades is produced by Guggenheim® Award-winning jazz pianist and Director of Jazz Studies at the University of Pittsburgh Geri Allen and 4-time GRAMMY®Award-winning producer Steve Rosenthal. The 3-CD box set contains the complete live Concert By The Sea including 11 previously unreleased tracks, the original edited Columbia release from 1956 and bonus material including announcer Jimmy Lyons and interviews with the Erroll Garner trio: Denzil DaCosta Best, Eddie Calhoun, and Garner himself, recorded directly after the concert.

Concert by the Sea was arguably the finest record pianist Erroll Garner ever made, and he made many — a few outstanding — good recordings. But this live recording (September 19, 1955) with his trio presented a typical Garner program; it was a mixture of originals, show biz, and pop standards delivered with his unique delivery and enthusiasm. The rhythms and brilliant use of tension and release were perfectly captured. And while for many jazz listeners, Garner’s deliberate structures were too orchestrated, there was an equal spontaneity in the propulsion of these orchestrations that swung as well as anything.

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/44,1 kHz | Time – 54:43 minutes | 644 MB | Genre: Jazz

Legendary quartets have been a staple in classical, pop and jazz traditions. Among these greats is Fourplay, an extraordinary lineup of musicians who have influenced the contemporary jazz world. Esprit De Four, the band’s latest work, features the ensembles most challenging repertoire to date. All four members contribute to the album, which includes the melodic gem “December Dream,” the intriguing “Firefly” and the breathtaking “Put Our Hearts Together,” a musical tribute to the victims of the tsunami that struck Japan in March 2011. Experience the spirit and magic of Esprit De Four as a pristine hi-res download.

Recorded over the summer at the Hollywood & Highland KKJZ Summer Concert Series, Live in Hollywood features Sanchez and his Latin Jazz Band at their best. The album opens as the live show did with the swinging tune Promenade. Sanchez follows the tune up with the first-ever Poncho Sanchez Medley. He says it s a concept that he and his music director Francisco Torres have discussed for years.
In addition, Sanchez pays tribute to two of his biggest influences keyboardist, composer and arranger Clare Fischer and Latin Jazz percussionist Mongo Santamaria. Fischer helped Sanchez get his first record deal with Discovery, the label for which he recorded before joining Concord in 1982.
Sanchez also delivers a high-energy rendition of Afro Blue that serves as a tribute to the late Santamaria, whom he considers a good friend and important influence. When Sanchez performed at the Hollywood & Highland concert, he introduced the song by talking about what an inspiration Santamaria was to him. While Sanchez s brief commentary didn t make it onto the album, the song still stands a worthy tribute.
For Sanchez, who turned 60 this year and will receive A Lifetime Achievement Award from the Latin Recording Academy at a November 14, 2012 ceremony in Las Vegas. Being able to make a living playing music is a dream come true. As a teen, Sanchez first learned to play guitar from the guy across the street because he couldn t afford to buy an instrument and his friend would let him borrow his guitar. He then gravitated to percussion after his siblings introduced him to the music that was then called cha-cha music.
I ve been involved with this from the beginning but just as a listener when I was a young boy, he says. I never dreamed it would happen that I would become a professional musician. You go with the flow and you go with your heart and what feels right, and now I know it feels right because this is how I made a living for my whole life. I m not braggin but I did pretty well for a guy from the neighborhood.

Recorded at Reaction Studios, Toronto. Feb./Mar. 1993

There is an intelligence and sophistication to Holly Cole’s singing that sets her apart. She can imbue well-worn standards and eclectic songs with an uncanny combination of sensuality, innocence, originality and sheer musicality. Cole takes tunes everybody thinks they know and discovers new undercurrents in the venerable anthems of contemporary composers, wrapping her honesty, compassion and sardonic wit around their sometimes-fragile creations. The results are sexy, provocative, spellbinding, sometimes dangerous and never, ever dull.

Along with Cassandra Wilson and Patricia Barber, the Canadian songstress has helped redefine the world of the female jazz vocalist. In Cole’s case, this can be directly linked to her ability to defy genre categorization and her ambitious musical choices. “I look at the essence of a song,” muses Cole. “If it’s a great lyric I often love to slow it down, explore it, dissect it and deconstruct it. I love to take it apart and then put it back together and look at it in an entirely different way. In the process, it often becomes more evocative. That’s a huge part of my art form, that’s a huge part of what I do.”

On her critically acclaimed 1993 album Don’t Smoke In Bed, Holly augments her understated jazz repertoire with nuanced interpretations of pop classics and blues and country standards not to mention a French ballad. What’s even more impressive is she pulls it all off flawlessly with a style and grace that has become her signature. In addition to sublime takes on Cole Porter’s “Get Out of Town” and Kurt Well’s “Je Ne T’Aime Pas,” the tasteful 12-song set also includes her crossover hit of Johnny Nash’s “I Can See Clearly Now.”

The multi-awarded and internationally acclaimed Canadian songstress Holly Cole once again presents a conceptually ambitious piece of work with a unifying theme: An intimate collection of songs for the night-time. It’s a captivating cycle of songs that delivers additional proof of Holly Cole’s unique mastery of song interpretation, this time featuring a theme where she is truly at home. Eleven wonderful tracks for the special time between dusk and dawn.

In trademark Holly Cole fashion, NIGHT crosses different corners of the musical spectrum from the first focus track, a Bond theme by John Barry (“You Only Live Twice“), to a Mort Shuman classic (“Viva Las Vegas“) to Tom Waits (“Walk Away“, “Whistling Past The Graveyard“), Jaques Brel (“If You Go Away”) and Gordon Lightfoot (“If You Could Read My Mind“). A song by late Sixties/early Seventies Canadian folk-pop duo The Poppy Family has gently found its way into the repertoire (“I Thought Of You Again“). All of this is complimented by an American songwriter/folk classic from the Danny O’Keefe songbook (“Good Time Charlie’s Got The Blues“), a riveting version of a Captain Beefheart tune (“Love Lies“), a timeless pop ballad (“I Only Have Eyes For You“) and – a wonderful new Holly Cole original – “You’ve Got A Secret“.

Winner of the Montreal International Jazz Festival’s prestigious Ella Fitzgerald Award in 2013 for her extraordinary contribution to contemporary jazz vocals, Canadian vocalist Holly Cole isn’t one of those artists who fall into any one category. Her smoky voice is sultry, yet she’s ironically humorous and candid while reshaping traditional standards and pop classics. Jazz is her bedrock, but not exclusively.

Holly has always had her own unique way, since ‘Girl Talk’s thundering potential, she’s always delivered with precision and a promise of things to come. ‘Night’ calls on all of Holly’s musical endeavors. Her interpretation is so profound she can truly introduce you to a song all over again. Honestly, how do you present ‘I Only Have Eyes for You’ again? Hear it for yourself on this album. She approached one of the finest songs ever written, Canadian Gordon Lightfoot’s ‘If You Could Read My Mind’ slowly, with the uttermost reverence and heart.
Holly Cole has no equal when it comes to taking songs by artists as varied as Elvis Costello, Tom Waits, Jacques Brel and making them her own.

Recorded at Grand Avenue Studio, Hamilton, Ontario except “The Briar and The Rose” Recorded at McClear Pathe, Toronto, Ontario Canada. Mastered from the original analog tapes by Kevin Gray.

These abilities come into full focus on her 1995 Blue Note release, Temptation, which finds Holly skillfully interpreting material by the-one-and-only Tom Waits. Taking a minimalist approach to the arrangements and forgoing as much pre-production as possible serves Cole and the material well here. A majority of the cuts on Temptation are first takes which heightens the spontaneous and intimately genuine feel of Cole’s breathtaking performances even further.

The many highlights include a catchy version of “Jersey Girl,” which made it onto a number of radio playlists, and a rendition of “The Briar and the Rose,” augmented by the Canadian Brass. Also featured here are renditions of: “Take Me Home,” “Train Song,” “Temptation,” “Falling Down,” “Invitation to the Blues,” “Frank’s Theme,” “Little Boy Blue,” “I Don’t Wanna Grow Up,” “Tango ’til They’re Sore,” “(Looking For) The Heart of Saturday Night,” “Soldier’s Things,” “I Want You” and “Good Old World.”

Recorded live to two-track at the Stephen Leacock Theatre, Keswick, using a single Calrec Ambisonic Microphone. Tracks 4, 5 and 10 recorded and mixed at Eastern Sound, Toronto, using the same microphone.

In March of 1990, the Holly Cole Trio, Holly Cole (Vocals), Aaron Davis (Piano) and David Piltch (Bass) determined that although they had recorded one small EP together ‘Christmas Blues’ it was time to record their first full length album. They wanted to preserve the quintessence of their live performance by keeping the parameters of recording of that first full record very close to the live environment that they had come to dominate in Toronto’s alternative Queen St west club scene. They enlisted Peter Moore who had just successfully produced the ground breaking ‘Trinity Sessions’ for the Cowboy Junkies. They found the Stephen Leacock Theatre in Keswick, Ontario and proceeded to record live off the stage in the empty hall, with the band strategically placed around a single Calrec Ambisonic Microphone. All the takes are full takes, no overdubbing. The record was highly successful, became a Gold selling release in Canada and a staple gold standard recording for showing off any piece of audio gear (speakers, amplifiers, microphones, etc.) at Audiophile conferences internationally and set Holly Cole up for a long and successful career.

‘The air of intimacy between artist and listener is so great that, if anything, the feeling of being present in the moment is greater here than on the 1996 live album It Happened One Night. On an album recorded ‘live in concert,’ the ambient noises that occur when a large number of people are gathered in one place can seem discordant or inappropriate when you’re listening to the CD in your car or your living room; the atmosphere can exclude rather than include you. Put on this disc, however, and you can imagine that Holly Cole is singing for you alone. It’s easy to focus on Cole’s emotionally compelling delivery, and at first you can be so mesmerized that you forget that the vocalist is one part of a trio. Listen more carefully, and it becomes apparent that the piano and bass accompaniments are deceptively simple — that they are, in fact, providing a counterpoint to the sung lyrics that is almost conversational. Suddenly, these simple arrangements feel quite complex. The most entertaining song on the album may well be Cole’s interpretation of the traditionally sunny and euphoric ‘Downtown.’ In her expert hands it moves from near cynicism to a guarded openness that makes this standard seem to have a range of meaning you may never have considered.’ –Maya Geryk

Recorded at Conway Studios, Ocean Way Studios, Studio City Sound and LAfx Sudios, Los Angeles, CA. Mastered by Bernie Grundman, Bernie Grundman Mastering.

Singer, dancer, ingenue, Lyn Stanley is a fully realized and mature talent exploding into her own. An award-winning ballroom dancer, Stanley melds that physical experience of movement with her performance of jazz standards, bringing the genre back to its dancing, kinetic roots. As executive producer, Stanley brings a Midas touch to the proceedings, producing in wholly urbane and sophisticated collection of the best the Great American Songbook has to offer. It takes a certain fortitude to record one more collection of jazz standards, but, then again, this is the most appropriate starting place for Stanley. Standards are the proving ground for Stanley’s singing philosophy and that philosophy is a sound and entertaining one.

The songs include a smoldering “Fever,” an island humid “That Old Black Magic” and a late-night “The Nearness of You” (featuring the inestimable Bob Sheppard on tenor saxophone) that set a relaxed mood, one that is sure of the talent to which it’s being devoted. There are no steep cliffs here, only straight and elegant byways to pass the time, with some exceptional ballad and mid-tempo vocal performances by the dense loam of talent that is Lyn Stanley.

Stanley takes these songs on with a conservative ear, opting for a traditional performance. The value of this approach is to always allow the composer to speak as intended when conceiving these pieces. Stanley’s singing is beyond sexy or sensuous; it is whatever transcends these anemic descriptors. This is singing and delivery that must wait for the proper word to come along to define it. The same applies for the elegance and grace her accompanying musician bring to the project, a who’s who of West Coast jazz talent convening for a holiday—and that holiday is Lost In Romance. –C. French saxophonist and composer Sylvain Rifflet has his finger firmly set on the pulse of modern times. Working with his group Alphabet, he has masterminded an innovative and spell-binding brand of music in which the modernity of his jazz sound combines with the world of New York minimalism. Poets and writers of the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century often described the then-nascent ”industrial world” and its machines as ”enemies of art.” However some did not see progress as dehumanizing. Science fiction imagined a futuristic world, which inspired artists and writers such as Jules Verne and HG Wells. Rifflet’s album Mechanics, with a cover illustration by Belgian comic book artist Francois Schuiten, journeys through forward looking and fantastical worlds.

FLAC (tracks) 24-bit/96 kHz | Time – 51:29 minutes | 990 MB | Genre: Jazz
Studio Master, Official Digital Download – Source: rattlerecords.net | @ Rattle Records

Greek pianist and composer Tania Giannouli follows her Rattle debut, Forest Stories (2012), with a very different recording from the newly formed Tania Giannouli Ensemble. With influences as diverse as Greek folk music, contemporary classical, modern jazz, world music and European avant-garde, Transcendence is an intoxicating, musically literate tour-de-force. These richly textured, beautifully balanced compositions are performed with great rigour, lyricism and passion, but above all they are strikingly honest and direct.

“Neither ‘landscape’ nor ‘new age’ music (and if we suppose this album to be ‘light jazz’ we are very wrong), Transcendence is in fact a metaphor. Composer Tania Giannouli has responded to the plight or her noble country through music. As reflected in the undulating waves in the video for ‘The Sea’, Giannouli’s music offers a powerful allegory that not only speaks to the lesson of civic stature Greece gifted to the world, but also of the excesses of power shown by Europe, which, in its shameless arrogance, would prepare yet another note of debt to be sent to Athens –– even as the sound of this music rings in their ears! One can hear a breeze blowing in Transcendence that has all but eradicated ‘civility’ from European dictionaries.” –Ricardo Salo

The dynamics, the space, the holographic presentation and cymbals so real you literally can taste the bronze in you teeth fillings. (Having spent 15-years behind the drums I know this instrument and there has never been a more realistic track in the digital domain. EVER! Thank you Johan, thank you Jan-Eric & thank you DSD
Kjell Öhman – Kjell Öhman – Blues Opus3 4:35
An improvised Hammond organ piece with Kjell Öhman leading the way. Very jazzy blues with excellent musicians having fun. When the musicians thought that the recording was done, Jan-Eric said, “I am sorry, but you´re not..!” I want you to play a blues for me! In about 10 minutes, “Blues Opus 3″ was born!!
Sören Hermansson & Per-Ove Larsson – Gammal Fäbopsalm 4:25
An old pastoral Hymn rumored to have been played by a blind man traveling the countryside with his daughter making a living playing violin. Later arranged and transcribed for other instruments, here organ and horn.
Peder Riis – Fantasie 2:35
The leader and founder of the Stockholm Guitar Quartet, Peder Riis, plays here on the 11-stringed Georg Bolin guitar. Recorded in the same church from the 11th century with it´s wonderful acoustics, where also the Quartet was recorded.
Wager-Åstrand – Fasten Seat Belts 4:24
A bit avant-gard music, with mallets, percussion and organ, recorded in the huge Hallgrims Church in Reykjavik, Iceland, with it´s very impressive acoustics! This piece is from the work, “Live at Vattnajökull”. (PLAY IT LOUD! EXTREME DYNAMICS)
Kenneth Arnström – Stealin’ Away 4:24
Traditional Jazz from the 20-ties, very much inspired by Louis Armstrong. Featuring the horn genius, Kenneth Arnström, with the famous Swedish Jazz Kings behind him.
Lars Erstrand – Easter Parade 6:32
A real swingin´ “rave up” is ending this selection of tracks, with Vibes, Tenor Sax, Piano, double bass and Drums!

9 new tracks composed by master guitarist John Scofield. Bringing back the 1990 band with Joe Lovano, Bill Stewart and Larry Grenadier stepping in for Dennis Irwin and Marc Johnson.

John Scofield updates his early-90s quartet with drummer Bill Stewart and saxophonist Joe Lovano by recruiting bassist Larry Grenadier for his fetching, appropriately titled Impulse! debut, Past Present. The nine exciting tunes Scofield penned on Past Present reflects his philosophy on playing jazz music. He stresses the importance of being knowledgeable of the musics deep, complex roots while simultaneously being spontaneous and in the moment while performing it. For an artist with such a multifaceted discography as Scofields, getting to the root of jazz means channeling the blues, as demonstrated on the discs closing, titled-track.

During the ’90s, ever-changing guitarist John Scofield paired with saxophonist and fellow Berklee alum Joe Lovano, drummer Bill Stewart, and bassists Charlie Haden, Marc Johnson, and Dennis Irwin, respectively, for three highly praised albums, Time on My Hands (1990), Meant to Be (1990), and What We Do (1992). Those albums found the oft-electrified Scofield, who played with Miles Davis in the ’80s, investigating songs of a more acoustic, often straight-ahead, pre-fusion jazz style. After an over 20-year break, Scofield reunited with Lovano and Stewart for 2015’s Past Present. Also joining the group this time is longtime Scofield associate bassist Larry Grenadier, who replaces the late Irwin. As with the quartet’s previous work, Past Present is a largely acoustic jazz album, with Scofield playing on an amped, semi-hollow-body guitar. Scofield also supplies all of the compositions on Past Present, some of which, poignantly, were inspired by his son Evan Scofield, who died from cancer at age 26 in 2013. While the music on Past Present harks back to jazz’s pre-rock-influenced golden age, there’s nothing retro, staid, or unadventurous about the group’s performance. This is propulsive, often angular and kinetic music that touches upon low-down blues (“Slinky”), Horace Silver-esque soul-jazz (“Get Proud”), and airy, swinging post-bop (“Museum”). In that sense, it brings to mind the ’70s work of Scofield contemporary Pat Martino. Barring 2003’s Oh! by the supergroup ScoLoHoFo, Past Present is one of the few times Lovano has recorded with Scofield in recent years and it’s invigorating to hear them together; Lovano’s warm saxophone dances against the crunchy decay of Scofield’s guitar. It’s that burlap-on-velvet combination that gives cuts like the languid “Hangover” and the moody “Season Creep” an organic, tactile quality. There’s also a gleeful, almost comedic nature to the quartet’s interplay, as if the musicians are sharing an inside joke. “Chap Dance,” a bright, Western-swing-meets-soul-bop cut, is clearly a somewhat cheeky nod to saxophonist Sonny Rollins’ take on “I’m an Old Cowhand.” However, the comedic quality sometimes takes on a nuanced, melancholic tone, as on “Mr. Puffy.” A reference to Evan Scofield’s appearance while undergoing chemotherapy, the song starts out sounding sad, then quickly transitions into a tougher, overtly funky midsection anchored by a guttural, low-end riff from Lovano. Ultimately, the track, as with all of Past Present, is rife with love and in-the-moment energy inspired by Scofield’s past experience, but created with a hopeful eye to the future.

Recorded: April 2011, Auditorio Radiotelevisione svizzera, Lugano

Catalan guitarist José Luis Montón made a vital contribution to singer Amina Alaoui’s “Arco Iris” and during the session producer Manfred Eicher determined that a Montón solo project would be highly appropriate for ECM. Thus this extraordinary disc, recorded in Lugano last year. It’s a major artistic statement. With its programme of Montón compositions drawing upon the melodic subtleties, rhythmic vitality and emotional power of flamenco, making connections also to classical tradition, it can at once take its place alongside the label’s finest solo guitar albums.

“As the title says, there is nothing but guitar”, José Luis Montón remarks in a brief and self-effacing liner note. Just an acoustic guitar, and an astonishing guitarist. Over the years at ECM it has often been the case that one record production has opened a door into another, and when Manfred Eicher heard José Luis Montón’s creative and sensitive playing at the session for singer Amina Alaoui’s Pan-Iberian “Arco Iris” project, the potential of a solo disc from Montón was apparent at once. Like “Arco Iris”, “Solo Guitarra” was recorded at the Auditorium RSI Lugano in Switzerland. The session took place in April 2011, exactly one year after the Alaoui date.
In the solo pieces heard here the resourceful Montón builds upon the template, energy and emotional intensity of flamenco in the creation of his own pieces, rooted in the tradition and at the same time reaching toward new destinations: “Flamenco is very beautiful in itself and I am deeply grateful for the inspiration it has given me throughout my career and my personal struggle to find myself through music. I owe a special debt of gratitude to all the great masters of flamenco guitar that have enriched so much its language, introducing new characters in the alphabet of flamenco.” The flow of ideas in Montón’s pieces can be breathtaking, as melodic lines splinter into flurries of notes or dance elegantly through stacked rhythms, virtuosity always harnessed to thoroughly musical ends. The music also draws from other resources including classical music, Baroque music being specifically acknowledged with the J.S. Bach-inspired “Air”, which references the “Air” from Bach’s Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D Major, BWV 1068.
Born in Barcelona in 1962 José Luis Montón made his debut as a concert artist there in 1989. His recordings as a leader include “Flamenco entre amigos” (1996), “Aroma” (Auvidis, 1997), “Sin querer” (2000), “De la felicidad” (2005), “Flamenco Arabe 2” (2006), “Flamenco Kids” (2010) and “Flamenco Etxea” (2011). One of the characteristics of his work has been a willingness to search for points of contact with other disciplines and cultures. Amongst many examples are his “Flamenco Arabe” project with Egyptian percussionist Hossam Ramzy and collaborations with Lebanese classical violinist Ara Malikian. Montón has also explored the common ground between flamenco and music of the Basque region in work with accordionist Gorka Hermosa, played with singers of flamenco and fado traditions including Misia, Carmen París, María Berasarte, Mayte Martín, composed music for dance and theatre and much more…
For Montòn there is a common denominator running through such projects. “When I faced the challenge of doing this solo album, I wondered what it was that touched me the most in an artist’s work and concluded that it was the quality of sincerity. In this music I have tried to translate that sincerity and love of art which I appreciate so much when I encounter it.”
Montón’s current projects-in-progress include “Clavileño”, described as “a new way of feeling Spanish Baroque music”, tracing rhythmic dances of the Baroque back to Arab origins. He is also presenting a show based upon Bach and flamenco rhythms in Seville in April 2013, and collaborating on a programme of Spanish Songs of the 19th Century with classical guitarist David González and singer Clara Montes.

–C. In the 1950s and early ’60s, producer Norman Granz perfected the songbook approach to album production by having vocalist Ella Fitzgerald interpret large segments of the standard jazz repertoire. In a frankly stated effort to expand the listening audience for this great body of work, Granz also asked Canadian pianist Oscar Peterson to churn out numerous instrumental songbooks albums under his own name with various combos. By the end of the decade, these included Oscar’s newly reconfigured trio with bassist Ray Brown and drummer Ed Thigpen. Like its companion albums, Peterson’s Richard Rodgers Song Book was never intended as a set of exercises in soul-searching profundity. Instead what you get are simple, straightforward, well-played appreciations of great American songwriting. Most of the melodies on this album resulted from Rodgers’ extraordinary collaborative relationship with lyricist Lorenz Hart, and a couple of Oscar Hammerstein numbers were thrown in as well. Those who enjoy this pleasant offering may wish to investigate Peterson’s songbook salutes to Duke Ellington, Vincent Youmans, Harold Arlen, Irving Berlin, and numerous others.

Hagar’s Song, the latest album from long-time ECM luminary Charles Lloyd, is a thrilling duo recording with Jason Moran. The pianist was a key member of Lloyd’s latter-day quartet, performing on the albums Rabo de Nube, Mirror and Athens Concert. This stunning new release features pieces dear to Lloyd including compositions by Billy Strayhorn, Duke Ellington, George Gershwin, Bob Dylan and Brian Wilson. The centerpiece on the album is the title suite, dedicated to Lloyd’s great-great-grandmother.

Hagar’s Song is a deeply intimate, intuitive offering from saxophonist Charles Lloyd and pianist Jason Moran, who has been a key part of Lloyd’s quartet since 2008. The program is a collection of standards and originals, as well as one thorny, angular free improvisation (“Pictogram”). The title piece is a five-part suite dedicated to the memory of Lloyd’s great-great grandmother, who spent most of her life as a slave. Its various sections reflect the harshness of that life, as well as moments of hope and determination. This work is not always “comfortable” to listen to, and it’s not meant to be, but it is musically rich and emotionally taut. Lloyd has always celebrated his deep love of jazz and pop traditions, and those are in abundance here. The near-symbiotic dialogue the pair share on Billy Strayhorn’s “Pretty Girl” and George Gershwin’s “Bess You Is My Woman Now” offers both dialogic imagination as well as deep listening. (On the latter, Lloyd reveals how supple his tonal reach remains on the tenor as he nears 75; he sweeps from its middle register to something closer to the alto’s.) The swinging read of “Mood Indigo” commences conventionally, but Moran’s deft, blues-drenched, physical stride lends an urgency to the conversation. Likewise his punchy approach on Earl Hines’ “Rosetta,” where Lloyd takes the melody and opens up its joy vein, while Moran pumps it with rhythmic and lyric invention courtesy of his amazing left hand. Lloyd’s love of rock and pop has its place here, too. On Bob Dylan’s ballad “I Shall Be Released,” Moran begins with a single repeating note, then a lone chord, as Lloyd tentatively states the melody. But by the second verse, he’s quoting from Leon Russell’s “A Song for You,” as Moran moves its harmonic base to the modal. Lloyd brings it back via an emotional blues, but his tenor moves through its registers picking bits and pieces of the lyric line to meditate upon and explore with Moran. The closer, a reading of Brian Wilson’s “God Only Knows” is just gorgeous. Moran’s elaboration on the harmony in the intro sets it up outside its known parameters. Lloyd quotes the refrain and then takes the lyric line, exploring time and memory — Lloyd ran around with the Beach Boys in Southern California in the late ’60s. Satisfied, he turns it over to Moran to finish with a close, tender harmonic statement that whispers to a finish. Hagar’s Song finds Lloyd and Moran at their most naturally curious and deeply attentive best, offering a conversation so intimate the listener may occasionally feel she is eavesdropping.

Charles Lloyd has always led exceptional bands, and this is one of the finest. Following on from the live “Rabo de Nube” which won both the Readers and Critics Polls of Jazz Times, here is a studio album from the quartet with Jason Moran, Reuben Rogers and Eric Harland. Familiar material is reappraised and transformed in this session recorded in California in December 2009.

When Charles Lloyd showcased his quartet in a live setting on 2008’s Rabo de Nube, it was one of the more exciting, free-flowing dates of that year. It was physical, full of intense engagement and fiery energy. On that date, he performed a number of tunes he’d recorded before, along with new compositions. Mirror, recorded with the same band — drummer Eric Harland, pianist Jason Moran, and bassist Reuben Rogers — in a Santa Barbara studio, is, as the title suggests, a mirror image of the previous outing. Here too, the saxophonist revisits some older material with, thanks in large part to his sidemen, new ears. The material is mostly gently swinging ballads and outré investigations showcasing an even more spiritual side to Lloyd’s playing and arranging. But it also displays the great intuitive nuances this band is capable of. While the set opens with an elegant and gently swinging reading of the standard “I Fall in Love Too Easily,” it’s the follow-up, the spiritual “Go Down Moses,” that showcases the group’s persona with its modal, questioning concerns, while keeping the tune firmly in the church. The title track appeared on 1989’s Canto, and is here performed with the kind of deep commitment and sense of interdependent energy only time and wisdom can impart. Another tune from that album, “Desolation Sound,” while still a ballad, features a lot more engagement from the players here: Moran’s solo looks in and through the changes to find a way outside and gets there. Harland’s shimmering breaks add more crackle than on the original. Likewise, “The Water Is Wide” and “Lift Every Voice and Sing” are performed, in their restrained way, more energetically than they were on their respective albums. One of Mirror’s great surprises is a tender reading of the Beach Boys’ “Caroline, No.” While the melody is inescapable, Lloyd very quickly transforms it into a jazz ballad of haunting, romantic beauty. On a pair of Monk tunes here — “Ruby, My Dear” and “Monk’s Mood” — Moran’s own musical personality is given free rein. He expresses it with his deft senses of rhythmic and harmonic intuition, underscoring unexpected phrases and elaborating on others. Ultimately, Mirror is another Lloyd triumph. It may not shake the rafters with its kinetics, but it does dazzle with the utterly symbiotic interplay between leader and sidemen.
